Why they called it the Spice Island
Cloves made Zanzibar rich and gave the island its name in the trade routes of the Indian Ocean. A spice-farm visit takes you into a working smallholding outside Stone Town where you handle the plants themselves — cinnamon bark scraped from a branch, a vanilla pod split open, nutmeg in its red lacework of mace, lemongrass crushed between your palms.
Pair it with Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, home to the Zanzibar red colobus. There are only a few thousand of these monkeys left and they exist nowhere else; at Jozani they feed unbothered a few metres from the forest path, which makes for exceptional photographs.

What do you actually see on a spice tour?
Growing cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper, vanilla, lemongrass, turmeric and tropical fruit, with a guide who has you smell, taste and guess each one. Most tours finish with a fruit tasting and a Swahili lunch on the farm.
Where is Jozani Forest and what lives there?
Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is about 35 km south-east of Stone Town. It protects the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey — found nowhere else on earth — plus Sykes' monkeys, bushbabies and a mangrove boardwalk.
Can the spice farm and Jozani be combined in one day?
Yes, and it is the most efficient way to do both: spice farm in the morning with lunch, Jozani in the early afternoon, back at your beach hotel by mid-afternoon.
Is it suitable for children?
Ideal, in fact — the smelling and tasting keeps children engaged, and the colobus troops at Jozani sit close to the path.
