Lemosho Route

Our highest-success route up Kilimanjaro

Lemosho starts on the remote western side of the mountain at Londorossi Gate, crosses the vast Shira Plateau and then joins the southern circuit for the summit push. Those first quiet days through elephant-tracked forest and open plateau are the reason it works: you gain height slowly, sleep well and arrive at the summit camp with reserves intact.

It is the route we recommend most often to travellers who have never been above 4,000 metres, to photographers who want the mountain's best light, and to anyone who would rather share camp with a handful of groups than the Machame crowds.

Who it suits

Right for you if…

  • You want the best possible chance of reaching Uhuru Peak
  • You have eight days for the mountain and value quieter trails
  • This is your first time trekking above 4,000 m
  • You are travelling for the landscape as much as the summit

Itinerary

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa / Big Tree Camp (2,780 m)

A long drive around the mountain's western flank, then three to four hours through pristine forest where elephant and buffalo sign is common. The quietest first night on Kilimanjaro.

Day 2

Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m)

Five to six hours climbing out of the forest onto the Shira Plateau, an ancient collapsed caldera with Kibo filling the eastern sky.

Day 3

Shira 1 to Moir Hut (4,200 m)

A gentle plateau crossing with an optional afternoon acclimatisation walk up Lent Hills. Five hours, big skies, very few people.

Day 4

Moir Hut to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp (3,960 m)

Climb to 4,630 m at Lava Tower, lunch in the alpine desert, then drop into the senecio-filled Barranco valley. Seven hours of textbook acclimatisation.

Day 5

Barranco to Karanga Camp (3,995 m)

Up the Barranco Wall — a hands-on scramble with no technical difficulty — then across the valleys to Karanga. Four to five hours.

Day 6

Karanga to Barafu Camp (4,673 m)

Four hours to the summit camp. Early dinner, kit check, and sleep while it is still light.

Day 7

Summit day: Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) and down to Millennium Camp (3,820 m)

Midnight start, Stella Point at sunrise, Uhuru Peak soon after, then a long descent. Twelve to fourteen hours.

Day 8

Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640 m)

A final three to four hours through the rainforest. Summit certificates at the gate and transfer to your hotel.

Questions

Questions about this trip

Why does Lemosho have the highest success rate?

Eight days, a gradual western approach and two natural climb-high-sleep-low days mean your body has the most time to adapt. Lemosho climbers also arrive at Barafu less depleted because early days are shorter.

Is Lemosho worth the extra cost over Machame?

If your priority is reaching Uhuru Peak, yes — the extra day buys a measurable improvement in acclimatisation and a quieter first three days. If budget is the constraint, seven-day Machame remains a strong choice.

Can Lemosho be done in seven days?

Yes, by skipping Moir Hut, and we run that version on request. We recommend the eight-day itinerary for first-time high-altitude trekkers.
