A collapsed volcano that became a wildlife amphitheatre
Two to three million years ago a volcano the size of Kilimanjaro collapsed in on itself, leaving a caldera 19 kilometres across with walls rising 400 to 600 metres above a flat, spring-fed floor. Today around 25,000 large animals live inside it, and because they have little need to migrate, game viewing is extraordinarily concentrated.
The drive down the descent road at first light is one of East Africa's great travel moments: mist on the Lerai fever trees, hippos in Ngoitokitok, flamingos rimming Lake Magadi in pink, and lion prides so habituated they sleep beside the track. Ngorongoro is also the most reliable place in Tanzania to search for critically endangered black rhino.
Practicalities
What a crater day looks like
- 05:30 — early breakfast at your rim lodge or Karatu hotel
- 06:30 — begin the descent; the first hour has the best light and the fewest vehicles
- 07:00–12:00 — game driving the crater floor: Lerai forest, Magadi shoreline, Gorigor swamp
- 12:30 — picnic lunch beside Ngoitokitok Springs, hippos watching from the water
- 13:30 — ascend the exit road with views back across the caldera
- Optional — Maasai boma visit or Olduvai Gorge museum on the way to the Serengeti
Beyond the crater
The wider conservation area
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers 8,300 square kilometres and is unusual in Africa: Maasai pastoralists graze livestock alongside wildlife across most of it. Beyond the main caldera you can walk the Empakaai Crater rim to a flamingo-covered lake, visit Olduvai Gorge where the Leakeys uncovered early hominin fossils, or hike part of the Ngorongoro highlands with a Maasai guide.

How much does a Ngorongoro Crater tour cost?
Park entry is USD 71 per adult per 24 hours plus a crater service fee of USD 295 per vehicle per descent, on top of transport, guide and accommodation. Ask us for a quote for your dates and group size and we will show exactly how those official fees sit inside the total.
Can you see the Big Five in the Ngorongoro Crater?
All five live there. Lion, elephant and buffalo are seen on most descents, black rhino are present in small numbers on the open floor, and leopard hide in the Lerai forest and on the rim — the least reliable of the five.
How long can you stay on the crater floor?
Vehicles are permitted six hours per descent, typically from around 06:30 to 12:30 or a later afternoon slot. Most itineraries use the morning, with a picnic lunch at Ngoitokitok Springs before ascending.
Should I stay on the crater rim or in Karatu?
Rim lodges cost more but put you at the descent road at dawn, when the floor is quietest and animals most active. Karatu, 20–30 minutes below, is far cheaper and perfectly workable with an early start.
