Machame Route — 7 Days
The 'Whiskey Route': dramatic scenery, Barranco Wall and strong acclimatisation.
The driest and quietest of Kilimanjaro's main routes, with an acclimatisation day at Mawenzi Tarn and a Marangu-side descent.

Rongai Route
Rongai is the only route that climbs Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. It gets less rain than the southern routes, sees a fraction of the traffic, and includes a night at Mawenzi Tarn beneath the jagged second summit — a camp most climbers rate as the highlight of the trek.
Our seven-day version adds a full acclimatisation day at the tarn, which is what lifts the summit odds into the same bracket as seven-day Machame. Descent is via the Marangu route, so you see two sides of the mountain.
Who it suits
Itinerary
Drive around the mountain to the Kenyan side, then three to four hours through pine plantation and bush. Colobus monkeys are common and camps are quiet.
Six to seven hours across open moorland with Kibo directly ahead and Mawenzi's spires to the right.
A short, steep three to four hours to a dramatic camp beneath Mawenzi's crags — the most beautiful campsite on the mountain.
Day-walk on the Mawenzi flanks to about 4,600 m, returning to sleep at the tarn. This is the day that makes Rongai work.
Four to five hours across the lunar saddle to the summit base camp. Early dinner and rest.
Midnight start up the scree to Gilman's Point, then the rim to Uhuru. Descend the Marangu side to Horombo. Twelve to fifteen hours.
Five to six hours down through moorland and rainforest, certificates at the gate and transfer to Moshi.

Questions
Three reasons: it is the driest side of the mountain, it is the quietest of the popular routes, and the Mawenzi Tarn acclimatisation camp is spectacular. It is also the best option during the April–May and November rains.
Not harder, but the summit approach from Kibo Hut is a steep, monotonous scree slope rather than Machame's rockier path. Daily gradients before that are gentler.
The opposite, early on — the northern forest sees fewer trekkers and buffalo, elephant and colobus signs are common on day one.
