Stone Town — Mji Mkongwe in Swahili — is the historic heart of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its lanes were laid out by Omani, Indian, Persian, African and European traders whose architecture still crowds together: carved brass-studded doors, wooden balconies, Hindu temples beside mosques and a 19th-century sultan's palace facing the sea.
The town's history is not all romance. Zanzibar was one of East Africa's largest slave-trading centres, and the site of the former slave market with its holding cells and memorial is the most important stop on any honest tour of the island.

How long do you need in Stone Town?
One full day covers the main sights comfortably; two nights lets you eat well, shop without rushing and catch sunset from a rooftop twice. Many travellers stay a night on arrival and another before flying out.
Is Stone Town walkable?
Entirely — the old town is a maze of lanes too narrow for cars. That is part of the charm, and the reason a guide is worth it for your first few hours.
What should I not miss in Stone Town?
The Old Fort and House of Wonders exterior, the former slave market and Anglican cathedral, Darajani market, the carved doors of Shangani, Freddie Mercury's birthplace, and the Forodhani night food market at sunset.
Is it safe to walk at night?
Generally yes in the main lanes, which stay busy. Take the usual city precautions: leave valuables at the hotel, walk with company late at night and use a taxi to outlying areas.
