Machame Route

The mountain's most scenic classic

Machame approaches Kilimanjaro from the south-west and circles beneath the southern ice fields before attacking the summit from Barafu. It is the route most climbers picture: rainforest on day one, the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, the vertical drama of the Barranco Wall and the glacier-lit crater rim at dawn.

Seven days gives you a proper acclimatisation profile with a genuine high-climb, sleep-low day, which is why our seven-day Machame posts far better summit numbers than the rushed six-day version sold elsewhere.

Who it suits

Right for you if…

  • You want the most spectacular scenery on the mountain
  • You are comfortable camping for six nights
  • You can walk five to seven hours a day on consecutive days
  • You have seven days available and want strong summit odds
  • You do not mind sharing camps with other groups

Itinerary

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Machame Gate (1,800 m) to Machame Camp (2,835 m)

Drive from Moshi to the gate, complete registration and walk five to six hours through dense montane rainforest — moss, colobus monkeys and, if you are lucky, turaco calls. Camp at the forest edge.

Day 2

Machame Camp to Shira Cave / Shira 2 (3,850 m)

The forest gives way to heather and giant groundsel. Four to six hours of steady climbing along a ridge with the Shira Plateau opening ahead and Kibo's glaciers overhead.

Day 3

Shira to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp (3,960 m)

The classic acclimatisation day: climb to 4,630 m at Lava Tower for lunch, then descend to Barranco through the surreal senecio forest. Seven hours, high then low — exactly what your blood needs.

Day 4

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3,995 m)

Scramble the Barranco Wall — steep, hands-on in places, never technical — then traverse scree valleys to Karanga. A short four-hour day that keeps acclimatisation on track.

Day 5

Karanga to Barafu Camp (4,673 m)

Four hours across the alpine desert to Barafu, the summit launch camp. Early dinner, gear check with your guide, and sleep by 19:00.

Day 6

Summit day: Barafu to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), down to Millennium Camp (3,820 m)

Wake around 23:30 and climb by headtorch to Stella Point for sunrise, then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Photographs at the summit sign, then a long descent to Millennium Camp. Twelve to fourteen hours — the hardest and best day of the trek.

Day 7

Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640 m)

Three to four hours down through the rainforest to Mweka, where certificates are issued and a vehicle takes you to your hotel for the shower you have been dreaming of.

Questions

Questions about this trip

Is the Barranco Wall dangerous?

It looks alarming from camp and feels fine once you are on it. The Wall is a steep, well-worn scramble with occasional hand-holds; guides position themselves at the tricky steps and porters go ahead. No ropes or climbing gear are used, and it takes about an hour and a half.

Why is Machame called the Whiskey Route?

The older Marangu route was nicknamed the Coca-Cola route because of its huts and soft-drink stalls; Machame, being tougher and camping-only, became the Whiskey route. The names stuck long after the drinks stopped.

How busy is the Machame route?

It is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro, so camps are social, especially in July–September. Days 3 and 4 share the trail with Lemosho climbers. If solitude matters more than scenery, look at Rongai or the Northern Circuit.

What is the summit success rate on 7-day Machame?

In our experience well above 85% for healthy climbers who trained and followed the guides' pacing. The same route in six days drops noticeably, which is why we lead with the seven-day version.
