Tarangire is northern Tanzania's third-largest park and its most underrated. Ancient baobabs stand over rolling grassland, and in the dry months the Tarangire river becomes the only permanent water for miles — drawing elephant herds in numbers that few parks in Africa can match, along with wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, giraffe and the predators that follow them.
Because it is under two hours from Arusha, Tarangire works as a day trip or as the opening act of a longer northern-circuit safari. Birders love it too: over 500 species have been recorded, including yellow-collared lovebirds and the odd-looking ground hornbill.

When is the best time to visit Tarangire?
June to October. As the surrounding bush dries out, thousands of animals concentrate along the Tarangire river and elephant sightings become almost constant. The green season (November–May) is quieter and excellent for birds, but game disperses.
How far is Tarangire from Arusha?
About 120 km, or an hour and a half to two hours by road on tarmac — the closest major park to Arusha and an easy first or last stop on any itinerary.
Can Tarangire be done as a day trip?
Yes, comfortably. A full-day trip from Arusha gives five to six hours of game driving. Staying overnight inside or beside the park lets you catch the far better early-morning and late-afternoon light.
Are there lions and leopards in Tarangire?
Yes — lion prides are resident and often found near the river, leopard are present but shy, and Tarangire has a reputation for large buffalo herds and unusual dry-country species like fringe-eared oryx and lesser kudu.
