Machame Route — 7 Days
The 'Whiskey Route': dramatic scenery, Barranco Wall and strong acclimatisation.
Kilimanjaro's classic hut route, with an extra acclimatisation day at Horombo to give you a real chance at the summit.

Marangu Route
Marangu is the mountain's oldest trail and the only one where you sleep in huts rather than tents. It approaches from the south-east on well-maintained paths, ascends and descends by the same route, and is the shortest itinerary that we are willing to run — six days, including a full acclimatisation day at Horombo.
Travellers choose it for the comfort of a bunk and a dining hall, for the gentler daily gradients, and for the shelter it offers during the wetter shoulder months. The trade-off is less varied scenery than Machame or Lemosho, and busier huts in peak season.
Who it suits
Itinerary
Four to five hours on a well-graded forest path, with an optional side trip to the Maundi Crater for views into Kenya. Sleep in bunk beds at Mandara.
Five to six hours as forest becomes moorland and Kibo and Mawenzi appear together. Horombo is the mountain's busiest hut village.
A crucial extra day. Walk up towards Zebra Rocks or the Mawenzi saddle to about 4,300 m, then return to Horombo to sleep low.
Five to six hours across 'the saddle', a stony alpine desert between the two peaks. Early dinner and a few hours of rest before the summit attempt.
Midnight start on the steep scree to Gilman's Point, then the rim path to Uhuru Peak. Descend all the way to Horombo — eleven to fifteen hours in total.
Five to six hours back through moorland and forest to the gate, certificates and your transfer to Moshi.

Questions
It has the gentlest gradients and the only dormitory huts, so daily walking is comfortable. But the summit approach from Kibo Hut is steep scree and the short itinerary gives less acclimatisation, so success rates are lower than Machame or Lemosho — always add the Horombo acclimatisation day.
Simple wooden A-frame dormitories with bunk beds, foam mattresses and shared long-drop or flush toilets. Bring your own sleeping bag. Meals are served in a communal dining hut, and there is limited solar charging.
It is sold that way, but we discourage it. Skipping the acclimatisation day at Horombo meaningfully reduces your chance of reaching Uhuru Peak and increases altitude-sickness risk.
It is the most sheltered route and the huts keep you dry, which makes it a sensible rainy-shoulder choice alongside Rongai.
