Climbing Kilimanjaro

Africa's highest mountain, walked from rainforest to glacier

At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain on earth. Getting there takes no ropes or technical skill — just time, patience and a crew who know how to manage altitude. In five or six days you walk through five climate zones: farmland, cloud forest, heather and moorland, alpine desert and finally the arctic summit zone, where glaciers still cling to the crater rim.

We run every standard route on the mountain and choose it with you based on your dates, budget, tolerance for camping and how many days you can spare. Our climbs include a experienced lead guide and assistant guides, cook, porters, quality four-season tents, three hot meals a day, filtered drinking water, bottled emergency oxygen and twice-daily pulse-oximeter checks.

Choose your route

Four routes, four different mountains

Route choice changes the scenery, the crowds, the cost and, most importantly, your summit chances. Here is how they compare in plain terms.

Acclimatisation

Why the number of days decides the summit

Above roughly 2,500 m your body has to manufacture extra red blood cells to cope with thin air, and that takes time you cannot shortcut with fitness. Every extra night on the mountain — especially nights that follow a 'climb high, sleep low' pattern — measurably improves your odds.

Our guides walk deliberately slowly (the Swahili phrase every climber learns is pole pole, slowly slowly), push fluids to three or four litres a day, and check oxygen saturation each morning and evening. If readings drop dangerously or symptoms escalate, descent is immediate and non-negotiable.

  • 5 days (Marangu short) — not recommended; summit rates fall sharply
  • 6 days (Marangu, Machame) — workable for fit, altitude-experienced trekkers
  • 7 days (Machame, Rongai, Lemosho) — our standard recommendation
  • 8–9 days (Lemosho, Northern Circuit) — best acclimatisation and highest success

Included on every climb

Questions

Questions about this trip

How hard is it to climb Kilimanjaro?

Physically it is a series of long walking days — four to seven hours on most days, then eleven to fourteen hours on summit day. There is no technical climbing. The real difficulty is altitude: above 4,000 m every step is slower and sleep is poorer, which is why route length matters more than gym fitness.

How many days do I need on Kilimanjaro?

Seven or eight days on the mountain is the sweet spot. Six-day itineraries work for well-acclimatised trekkers, five days is a gamble we do not recommend, and eight or nine days gives the strongest summit odds for first-timers.

What is the best month to climb Kilimanjaro?

January to mid-March and June to October are the two dry windows. January–March is slightly warmer with fewer climbers and more chance of snow at the summit; July–September is the busiest and coldest but most reliable. Avoid mid-March to May, the long rains.

How old do I have to be?

Kilimanjaro National Park sets a minimum age of ten years for the standard routes, though we suggest twelve or older in practice. There is no upper limit; we regularly guide climbers in their sixties and seventies who train properly.

Will my phone work and can I charge it?

Mobile signal reaches surprisingly high on most routes, though it is patchy. There is no mains power on the camping routes, so bring two power banks — cold drains batteries fast. Marangu huts have limited charging in the dining halls.
