Charles George — the story behind Ruta Legacy
Ruta Legacy Safaris began with one guide, a notebook of hand-drawn itineraries and a belief that Tanzanian travel should be led by Tanzanians. Charles George grew up in the Arusha region in the shadow of Mount Meru, started out portering and guiding on Kilimanjaro, and built the company around the crews he trusted on the mountain.
The name is deliberate. "Legacy" is about what a trip leaves behind — for the traveller, and for the guides, porters, cooks and villages who make it possible.

Planning questions we hear most
How far in advance should I book a Tanzania safari or Kilimanjaro climb?
For July–September and December–February travel, book six to twelve months ahead — park lodges and the best mountain dates sell out early. Shoulder-season trips can often be arranged with four to eight weeks' notice, and we do accept last-minute bookings when permits and vehicles allow.
Is Tanzania safe for tourists?
Yes. Tanzania is one of Africa's most stable countries and tourism is a major part of the economy. Our guides are experienced professionals, our vehicles are serviced before every departure, and on Kilimanjaro every group carries a first-aid kit, pulse oximeter and bottled emergency oxygen.
Do you arrange airport transfers?
Every package includes transfers from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Arusha Airport or Zanzibar's Abeid Amani Karume Airport, with a driver waiting in arrivals holding your name.
